The spotted lanternfly, also known as lycorma delicatula, is a major pest all over the world. This troubling planthopper was initially found in China, India, and Vietnam. But in 2014, they were discovered for the first time in the United States. These pests are most common in northern states, especially Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. When not in flight, their forewings are greyish with black spots, and the wing tips display a network of veins. However, when they open their wings, their red and black hind wings and black and yellow abdomen are visible.
The life cycle of a Spotted Lanternfly:
The spotted lanternfly grows and develops from an egg to a full adult in less than a year.
- Eggs hatch: Spotted lanternfly eggs look like masses of mud that have been smeared. These eggs begin to hatch in May all the way through June.
- Nymphs: Spotted lanternflies have four different nymph stages, which take place from June to July.
- Adult: Anywhere from June to December, spotted lanternflies are full grown and begin looking for mates.
- Laying eggs: They mainly lay eggs at the end of the summer, but this can happen through December.
It’s important to note that adults do not survive the winter, which is why it’s essential to eliminate eggs when they are discovered!

Spotted lanternflies consume and damage a variety of plants, including fruit trees, grapevines, and hardwoods. Over time these pests break down and weaken trees and plants by consuming their sap and then secreting honeydew, which eventually turns to mold. This becomes detrimental to trees and garden plants because it attracts additional pests.
